Coleus Care

Coleus plants are attractive plants due to their variety of sizes and colors. Some of these plants grow like small bushes. However, other types thrive indoors with the appropriate pot, light, and humidity, which means that your Coleus can grow all year round indoors with proper care, maintaining its shape.

Tips to Take Care of Your Plants

Avoid Direct Sunlight— Coleus needs balanced shade and sunlight to maintain its colorful foliage. Though this houseplant enjoys the sunlight, too much sun could scorch and fade its vibrant hues. Find a windowsill or a spot in your home with bright and filtered sunlight, which will benefit the delicate leaves. Use a Draining Pot—Invest in a well-drained potting mix with rich organic matter. Add perlite or compost to the mix to improve its drainage and fertility.
Water Your Coleus Regularly— Keep the soil moist and avoid overwatering your plant by checking the top two inches. If it’s dry, it needs watering. Nevertheless, don’t water your Coleus too frequently during winter.
Keep Your Plant Humid—A high-humidity room (like a bathroom) is preferred for Coleus. These plants need light misting a few times a week or a humidifier, especially if they are droopy.
Fertilize Once a Month—Coleus needs a half-strength liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and winter.
Pinch Off the Flower Spikes—The Coleus grows flower spikes. If you pinch off those spikes, the foliage will increase, making your plant bushy and compact.
Prune Your Plant—Prune the Coleus to maintain a proper shape and size. Try propagating new houseplants from stem cuttings that root easily in water or soil.
Protect the Coleus from the Cold—The ideal temperature for this type of plant is 60°F to 75°F (24°C – 27°C) during the summer and 50°F (10°C) during winter. Also, keep your plant indoors during this time to protect it from cold drafts and frost.
